August 17, 2017 MEDIA ALERT
Miami… (August 17, 2017) Mark Asay, 53, convicted in the murders of two people in 1987, is scheduled to be executed August 24 at a Florida State Prison near Raiford.
“The death penalty is a visible sign of a violent society trying to take away human dignity. Every human being is created in the image and likes of God, so all life is sacred,” said Deacon Edgardo Farias, Director for Detention Ministry of the Archdiocese of Miami.
In this note, the Archdiocese of Miami will hold the following Prayer Vigils for the victims, their families and the convicted:
August 23, 2017: · On-air Prayer Vigil on Radio Paz 830AM from 2-3 p.m. · St. Dismas Outreach Center in Saint Robert Bellarmine Mission located at 2640 NW 34th Street, Miami, FL 33142 at 7 p.m. · St. Dismas Outreach Center in Saint Joseph Haitian Mission located at 1210 NW 6th Avenue, Pompano Beach, FL 33060 August 24, 2017: · Mass at 11:45 a.m. in St. Martha Catholic Church located at 9401 Biscayne Blvd, Miami Shores, FL 33138.
“Capital punishment degrades the dignity of both executioner and executed. And provides no real ‘closure’ to the victims and their families,” said Most Reverend Thomas Wenski, Archbishop of Miami. “Society can protect itself from bad actors without it.”
