Getting help after Hurricane Irma

Federal government offers assistance

MIAMI | The archdiocese's three counties -- Broward, Monroe and Miami-Dade -- are among 37 in Florida that have been designated as eligible for individual federal disaster assistance.

To speed the process, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has set up a website at disasterassistance.gov to apply for aid.

The site includes a link to apply online, as well as a questionnaire to help find the best sources of aid. Those include programs like Social Security Child's Payments, the National Flood Insurance Program, and mortgage insurance for disaster victims.

There are also links to hospitals, as well as other federal agencies and temporary lodging through the Airbnb website.

Those who prefer to apply by phone, or who have questions about the process, can call 1-800-621-FEMA (1-800-621-3362).

U.S. Senator Bill Nelson has also offered his assistance. He can be reached at billnelson.senate.gov or 1-888-671-4091.
