KEY BISCAYNE| St. Agnes Academy launched a Spanish Immersion Program for the 2017-18 school year. The program is based on the TWIN-CS (Two-Way Immersion Network for Catholic Schools), which is an initiative of the Roche Center for Catholic Education at Boston College.

St. Agnes has begun implementation in Kindergarten through third grades, providing students with Spanish instruction in Spanish Language Arts and Science, 45 minutes a day, four times a week.

During their first Spanish immersion classes, third graders described themselves to form a class collage called “Yo soy...” (“I am”).  Later, they had wonderful discussions about our solar system and played the game “Yo tengo...Quien tiene” (“I haveā€¦ who has”).

Meanwhile, first graders shared their feelings about starting a new school year. Kindergarten students began the year using the sight word “yo.” They combined “yo” with words like “pinto” (paint) and “leo” (read) to form sentences in their workbook.

Through this excellent program, St. Agnes Academy teachers and faculty are happy to prepare the next generation of bi-cultural and bilingual learners.
