MIAMI SPRINGS | Andrea Schroeder, an eight grader at St. Andrew School in Coral Springs, is the repeat winner of the fourth annual Archdiocese of Miami Spanish Spelling Bee. She won last year as well.
Students from fifth through eighth-grade representing Catholic schools in Miami-Dade and Broward counties competed at the bee, which took place March 3 at Blessed Trinity School in Miami Springs.
The competition began with a written spelling test which eliminated most of the contestants. The remaining students then had to hear the word and spell it out loud before a panel of three judges. After a number of rounds, only Andrea remained standing.
She will once again travel to San Antonio, Texas, to compete in the seventh annual Santillana National Spanish Spelling Bee July 13-15. She and a parent will receive round-trip tickets to the competition.
